Many learning guides promise you can read 1,000 or more words per minute with full comprehension. It is an appealing pitch, and the evidence against it is overwhelming. The good news: what actually works is better than reading faster, because it changes what you remember, not just how quickly your eyes move.
The claim versus the evidence
A comprehensive review by Rayner and colleagues (2016) in Psychological Science in the Public Interest was blunt: "There is little evidence to support speed reading as a shortcut to understanding." The speed-accuracy trade-off is biologically unavoidable.
The limiting factor is your fovea, the sharp-focus area of your eye, which covers only about the size of your thumbnail held at arm's length. Claims about taking in whole paragraphs at a glance are physically impossible; the rest of the page is simply too blurry to read. Push your pace past what your eyes and working memory can process, and comprehension is what gets cut.

The method with real evidence behind it is SQ3R, developed by Francis P. Robinson in 1946 and still recommended by Stanford and Harvard:
- Survey: skim the structure first: headings, figures, summaries.
- Question: turn each heading into a question you want answered.
- Read: read actively, hunting for those answers.
- Recite: close the book and test yourself on what you just read.
- Review: return at spaced intervals to lock it in.
SQ3R does not make you read faster. It makes you read smarter, extracting more value from every minute you spend with the material. That is the real meaning of speed learning: less total time to durable knowledge, not more words per minute.
